Sponsored by: EMI Computational Mechanics Committee (CMC)
The Computational Mechanics Committee (CMC) of ASCE-EMI will be conducting a Student Paper Competition at EMI 2025, in place of the Student Poster Competition. The competition is open to a student author of an abstract submitted to the EMI 2025 conference that is in the field of computational mechanics.
Purpose
- Encourage student involvement in Computational Mechanics fields within EMI.
- Expose students to Computational Mechanics research of other groups.
- Facilitate interactions among faculty and students to build up strong networking and be ready to take on future responsibilities within the technical community.
- Improve their technical writing and presentation skill, as well as to promote high-quality submissions to the flagship journal of EMI, the Journal of Engineering Mechanics.
Requirements
- Submit an abstract as the lead author in the thematic areas of Computational Mechanics before the designated conference deadline and register for EMI 2025. Submission to a CMC sponsored mini-symposium is encouraged but not required.
- Retain their student status by April 1st, 2025, and the main contributor to the research.
- Participate only in the CMC student competition. Participation in multiple competitions will automatically disqualify you from this competition.
Deadlines
- February 1, 2025 – express interest to participate in the student paper competition by emailing the Chair Prof. Ravindra Duddu at [email protected] and attach a screenshot of your abstract acceptance notification. The paper template will be provided to the student by February 15, 2025.
- March 31, 2025 – submit by email the PDF file of the full-length paper (typically 4 pages long according to the template) to Chair Prof. Ravindra Duddu at [email protected]. The student must write the paper as first author and conduct majority of the work. A brief letter of support from the faculty advisor is required along with the full paper submission.
Prizes
- Three papers will be selected as winners, who will receive a cash prize.
- EMI will present award certificates at a separate student recognition event during the conference. (Note: certificates will no longer be distributed at the banquet)
- Winners may have the opportunity to share their CV and engage in a one-on-one session with CMC sponsor(s).
Process
- The submitted papers will be evaluated by a panel of expert judges. Up to six finalists may be selected, who will give oral presentations to the panel of judges either via Zoom (before the conference) or in person (at the conference). The dates of the oral presentation will be announced by May 1, 2025.
- Student finalists may be invited to submit an extended version of their papers for an invited special collection on Journal of Engineering Mechanics (example from previous years).
